The Avengers.
I just don't even know where to start.
OK, yesterday (and part of today) I went to this very large event known as the Ultimate Marvel Movie Maration. Long story short, it was about 12 straight hours of super hero movies in chronological order (Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America), culminating in the midnight premiere of The Avengers. So maybe I was already psyched up from a mix of mindless flashy action and food and sleep deprivation, but when it was time for the grand finale, the big payoff, the cherry on the cheesy movie cake, I was expecting the largest, most extravagant, most balls-to-the-wall action-packed tugging-on-your-heartstrings epic tale of epicness to be likened to the ambrosia of the Gods.
And I got it.
I got that shit in spades.
It is by no means a "good" movie. I mean hell, the main characters are dressed in spandex, LARP armor, or barely anything at all. But it is a very entertaining movie. The writing is really well done, the character dynamics are wonderful for just about any movie let alone a pulpy superhero movie, and there are a lot of great visuals, many of them not even to do with the FUCKING AWESOME CG but instead focusing on ineresting viewing angles and camera techniques.
You will laugh, you might cry, you will most certainly cry out "fuck yeah!" more than once.
And of course, being a Whedon flick, there are lots of great quoteable one-liners.
In essence what makes this movie great is not that it is thought provoking, or innovative, or "artistic" or whatever arbitrary model of "great" you choose to use. It is a great movie because it is just plain old fashioned fun. It is easy to see that those working on it were having a blast, from the actors on screen to particle effect animator #47, and the energy that went into it comes out on the screen.
But hey like I said, I'm not exactly a reliable source right now. I've had 1 hour of sleep in the last 25 hours, a most. I'm likely going to be recovering all weekend when I should be working on my finals.
I still think it was worth it.
