It was 1999

The wars on the planet of Qram stopped over a hundred years ago, yet the spying on other nations is only now coming to a close. On the surface Qram seems like a tranquil world where peace is the norm. Yet, there exists an undercurrent of finely crafted interrogation chambers lying just beneath the surface.
It’s dark…why is it always so dark…
I’ve been sitting in this dark room for ages. I often lay awake wondering when they’ll come for me. Sometimes I dream about the sun, yet most nights I sit in my room hoping to forget, forget how I used to live. I was like a royalty! Servants ran about my house to make life easier for me. Women fawned over me with the simple hope of being privileged with my, ‘hospitality’.
One thing I will never forget is this room, so much like a cage. It binds me day and night, depriving me of sensation. A shell of a man I am. They made me this way, poking needles into my body and bathing me in hot wax, refusing to feed me, and forcing me to throw up on the few occasions I ate.
They made me hate, they made me kill. I’m a prisoner! Imprisoned for doing the bidding of my country! Still, I would like to return. Given the chance I would return. Not to serve… no not to serve, that is for sure. What would I do I wonder. Should I forgive? No. Should I forget? I’ve tried.
Voices?! They’re coming for me again. I wonder what it will be this time. Will they pull out my nails? Or worst of all, will they shave my beard and cut my hair?! They shall not! I will not let them! They will know my wrath!
A guard opened the door, “You’re free to go.”
Lies! What devil trickery is this?! It’s a trap! I will not fall for their lies. They’ve tried this once before and I fell for it. For three weeks I was forced to stand in neck high water with weights on my ankles. No! I will not fall for it again!
This guard looks frustrated by my refusal…
“Back you devil!”
I fought, punching and kicking. I fought till his reinforcements arrived. I could not let them shave my beard and cut my hair, the little bit of dignity and man hood I had left! But it was no use. They beat me unconscious. Then they beat me some more out of spite. Those nasty leprechaun looking bastards, how they’ll pay.
It’s dark…why is it always so dark…
“Sir, sir, is you ok?” a man said as he poked and prodded with his stick.
“It’s dark.”
“Of course it be dark, it’s night!”
Could they have set me free? Impossible! This had to be one of their tricks! This was just another nasty little leprechaun trick! Yet if there was the slightest possibility I was free, then perhaps the war was over.
I have many questions and he may have answers! The wars were over; they’d been over for more than a hundred years! I’d been held and tortured longer than the average human life span! Yet minus the malnutrition I have the body of a forty year old! I have to find out more.
A peace treaty, with no winners? Outrageous! They settled it in peace? Not in the total annihilation of our enemies. Their chief spy and a high ranking noble was imprisoned, gone, captured and tortured by the enemy. How could they? How dare they?!
I’ve been betrayed by my own people, tortured by my enemies, and somehow lived more than 120 years, I have to do something… The youth I can live with, but the betrayals and offenses committed against me, I cannot and shall not tolerate.
It’s morning, my first day of freedom in over 100 years. Naked to the world I bask in the sun. My eyes bleed and my skin burns. Too long it’s been since I’ve seen her majesty. Though I cannot linger, I have to move. The hate I feel burns hotter than any sun; I struggle just to contain myself.
The man was nice enough to give me a ride to the capital. He fed me and clothed me. Had times been different he would have been much welcomed in my house where he would have lived a pleasurable life. But my house is gone, my wealth gone, my family gone, everything is gone.
Civilization has not changed. Buildings have come and go, yet people are the same. Everyone is struggling to survive. Honest people live in filth, surrounded by the scum of the universe. Bright Age my ass!
Where in the devil are these noises coming from? This place, though it’s familiar it’s strange. It shakes me to my core. I cannot stay and I cannot trust. I know that behind every corner is a leprechaun waiting to strike.
