"Ensign Runagai Chio." The Captain said, picking up a sheet of paper and reading it. "For meritorious work in the line of duty, and excellence in the line of battle, your outstanding performance has earned you not only the title of Lieutenant Junior Grade, but earned you the privilege of foregoing that rank, and I hereby promote you to the rank of Lieutenant of the Marines." He said, and handed it to Chio.
They both held their hand to it and looked at the camera man as he took the photo. Chio and Captain Howell stood in front of an altar, and all of Chio's superiors were present. Commander Yattez stood beside many of the other high-ranking officers, and all of them clapped. He only wished that Goro-sensei could be here, but he would have to travel for at least two weeks just for this ceremony, and it just didn't seem practical. Still, it was good to see his supervisor from his old base, Yattez there to see his accomplishment.
He took the certificate of training, and shook Captain Howell's hand, then rendered a salute. He had on his Justice jacket, and all of his medals along with his ribbons. Then there were the Lietenant bars on his shoulders, those were what he really concentrated on. They were especially pleasing to him, and looked quite good on him if he did say so himself.
"Now, Lieutenant Runagai, I already have your paperwork in the works, and you will be in charge of a whole Unit of infantry along with Chief Petty Officer Bryant and Lieutenant Commander Maeby.
"Thank you, sir. That's a lot faster than I've seen paperwork go through." Chio said, and to his comfort, the Captain laughed.
"Oh, believe me, I know. But I wanted to accommodate you in any way possible. You still have a few days before it goes fully through, so in that time, just relax, and take in the scenery. In fact, I've already called Lt. Commander Maeby, and she said that she would be glad to show you around the base and surrounding areas."
"Oh? Well that sounds fine, sir. Where is she? Is she that large woman with the--"
"No, that's Lt. Commander Wisha, she's in my office. Maeby has not made it quite yet. She should be here momentarily. But like I said, I know you've been through an ordeal already, and I know how hard some of those things can be to get out of your head. So if there is anything you need, you waste no time in asking. I've already informed all of my staff to make sure that you want for nothing."
Chio smiled some at this, but then there came the horrific images of his previous exploit. That damn sinking ship, that cat... thing, and then the island after that. He shook it out of his mind for the time being and joined the group as they began to mingle. He really felt like he was getting somewhere in the Marines, he wasn't sure how long it took Goro-sensei to become a Lieutenant, but he knew that it was the rank that he had when he found Chio for the first time. The fact that he was happy in that moment actually kind of worried him. It wasn't like him to be this happy, mostly because when he was, it meant that there was a calm before the storm.
