Alright, as promised, I'll give you guys a number of ideas for possible RPs we could add to the RP section. I am not proposing this as any sort of business idea as some have claimed, and at the same time, I'm not going to have much patience for people who just come in here to bash every single thing I propose [looking at you, Ticky].
These are SUGGESTIONS for possible things we could do, and I don't really have that much emotional investment in any single one of them. Still, if you're going to critique them, please make it constructive, or else I will not even grace you with a response. Kay?
In conclusion, I am just as much a part of this community as anyone else, and contributed more than my fair share back at OPHQ. Just as then, I do this not because I'm anxious to have more opportunities to RP as many think, but because I still consider the time I spent with you guys back there one of the best periods of my life, and so I genuinely care about trying to make this community a better place.
With that said, here I go. Most of these are just staple RP genres that you'd see in any RP board out there, so I'd just like to cover them all first before I move on to more original stuff. I'll also be adding more ideas onto this progressively. And if you see something you'd be interested in doing, please say so so that I can try and meet the "3 interested people" limit that CJ and Hito set:
High Fantasy: This is the one I originally proposed as my first suggestion in the RP Ideas thread, so I might as well cover it again here. High Fantasy is a term referring to any story set in an alternate world that is a parallel of Middle Age Europe, with the confirmed existence of magic and mythological creatures/races. The genre was originally started with the Tolkein Novels, and hasn't deviated much from that model since.
It evolved somewhat with the addition of Dungeons and Dragons, the first real "formal" RPing game, which started this entire practice before the internet was even around, the growth stemming from it eventually culminating in a wide spectrum of RP styles and formats, including the Forum RPs that our own site is included in.
At its most basic level, a High Fantasy RP usually involves a group of adventurers, these being the characters played by the Players, going on some sort of quest to do something, usually for the purpose of saving the world from some kind of Evil Dark Lord [like Sauron in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy]. Their quests will go on for a while until culminating in a confrontation with said villain, in which through their combined efforts, they are victorious. Now, this is only the most basic form of it, and some High Fantasy RPs are far more complex than this, involving interactions with many "parties" of adventurers, doing all sorts of adventures/missions/quests/journeys that they as a group have selected for themselves. This genre includes anything based on Tolkein's novels, the D&D games, Warhammer, a number of other franchises, as well as a good deal of Manga, Anime, and Cartoon based RPs with High Fantasy-type stories.
DC/Marvel/Superheroes: Another staple genre commonly seen in most any RP forum one might visit. These RPs are based on the Superhero Comics of [mostly] DC and Marvel, as well as a few others [Hellboy, the Heroes TV series, etc.]. Some will also use original universes with essentially the same concept. Still, all have some basic characteristics in common. This includes a modern world setting, almost always in Urban environments with masked vigilantes in costumes, the Heroes", fighting opposing masked criminals, the "Villains". Individuals on both sides will have superhuman abilities granted to them by various sources [Experimentation, Mutants, "Power granting substance/energy/whatever exposure, Magic, etc.]
Using said abilities, the members of both sides will fight it out in a feudalism-style war that seems to go on endlessly, with the heroes trying to maintain peace and order, while the villains are trying to take over the world or just exploit it for their own best interest.
School Life: Another very commonly seen RP Format, in which the players are either students or teachers at some school, living out the daily drama of school life. This one is less set than the previous two, and can come in a variety of forms with various elements thrown into it. Sometimes the students will have superpowers for some reason, while in others they're just regular humans. Still, this genre, which includes the famous Harry Potter series, as well as a near countless number of Cartoons, TV Shows, and especially Anime.
Vampires/Werewolves/Horror: Spurred on by the recent influx of interest in Horror monsters like vampires, werewolves, demons, and zombies, this genre is one commonly associated with "Goth" people, who's sub-culture could be seen as an embracement of it. This is one of the fastest growing genres right now, especially with the recent interest it has received from the introduction of the popular Twilight series. A number of Manga fall into this category, including Clamp's Vampire Knight series [although that series would also be counted among the School Life genre]. Series like Twilight, Teen Wolf, Van Helsing, Vampire Hunter D, as well as the Vampire Masquerade game just to name a few all fall under this category.
Post Apocalyptic Dystopia: With how pessimistic kids are today, its no wonder that RPs focusing on the end of the world, and what would perhaps remain afterward are popular these days. This genre, which also includes the popular "Zombie Apocalypse" sub-genre, is closely associated with the Horror genre, although they have a number of distinct differences. In RPs included in this, the world is either in a massive catastrophe [one that would qualify as a Mass Extinction event] or details what the world would be like after it was over, with whatever remained of humanity trying to rebuild the planet, as well as continue to survive against whatever had caused the world's collapse in the first place.
Alright, I think that's enough for now. I have more than this, but for the moment, I think that's good. If anyone would be interested in doing an RP in any of these genres, please say so, and we can talk about perhaps getting something started. One of my primary reasons for wanting to do this thread was to show you guys how many options there are out there, and that we're not nearly as limited as people here seem to think.
