Throughout the series, a certain smile has appeared 3 times in 3 different ways. 1: Doflamingo's flag: 2. Whitebeard's first appearance: 3. Trafalgar Law: In each one, it seems to be the same smile face, but in a different style. Doflamingo had a crossed out smile, while Law has a regular one, and Whitebeard's medicine had an upside down one. Could there be something going on, or is it all just a coincidence? What do you think?

If there is one thing I have learned from reading One Piece, it is that nothing is ever a coincidence. Oda is some kind of evil mastermind that way.
Since it was on Whitebeard's medicine and Law seems to feature it prominently, maybe it's something to do with medicine/vegapunk/something doctor related? That wouldn't explain why doflamingo has one that's crossed out though...could just be he hates Vegapunk or something silly like that. I have no idea.
Good eyes though Hito, I never would have spotted that at all.

Maybe Oda is a fan of Nightmare Before Christmas.

It's probably something related to medicine or doctors or whatnot. Law having it and it being featured on Whitebeard's medical equipment are pretty good indications of that. Doflamingo may have a variation of it because he may come from some kind of medical background, or something else related to the study of the human body. (his powers may be more than they appear, after all.) I used to think that Law and Doflamingo had a past together at one point, but that's less likely now. Perhaps they just had a similar background, represented by the smile symbol, and the reason Doflamingo's has a scar on it is to symbolize a corruption or alteration of the original ideal represented by the smiley. Or I don't know.

I agree that it probably has something to do with medicine or science, some kind of symbol related to that. If Vegapunk shows up with that symbol, then I think it's pretty much settled. As for Doflamingo having a crossed out version, maybe he does have something against Vegapunk or medicine or something. I don't know

Hito, you glorious person you. I agree the smiling face has something to do with medicine as well. As ticky mentioned before, Oda doesn't do things for no good reason. Gosh, I absolutely adore this find. I kind of want to read the manga again just to see if I can find something as well.

Huh, so it could be a secret code for alliances. If it's crossed out, you don't agree with something. If it's plain, you do. Crud, that is magnificent.

That is what it looks like to me. Open smile is good, crossed is not.
