I posted this in the chat already but I thought it'd be funny to share here. The only thing they get right is swatting, which is just as serious as it is portrayed here. Good to watch for a laugh, but it's rather disturbing that this is what a good portion of society thinks gaming culture is.

I think the even more disturbing thing is, this is probably what a good portion of gaming culture thinks gaming culture is.
It's more than clear from that video that this is by no means a serious meditation on the possible future of games and development, and more of a means of using a popular issue for the sake of entertainment, in a way that would be easy for most audiences to understand. Outside of a very narrow circle of interests, it's just meaningless, and inside it, it's just going to piss people off even more. Of course, they're not going to acknowledge that women have been designing, working on, and playing games since the beginning. Of course they're going to make things more skewed than they really are. Mainly because this isn't made for us.
As for the actual topic they're addressing? I really can't form a full opinion (mainly because, outside of those in the industry, it's next to impossible to tell what's a lie and what's not) but I think what's really making it difficult for some resolution to be achieved is the constant "us vs. them" mentality, which has never been effective when it comes to this sort of problem. All I've observed is a lot of gamer guys going "gaming is a boy's club, grrr grrr" and then a lot of their critics being all like "gaming is a boy's club, grrr grrr" and everyone pretending like culture is this thing that you can own and that the problem can only be fixed by one side winning, which would then, therefore, be bad for the other. On second thought, maybe SVU has a point and we're all treating this like it's a video game after all, lol.
Also, I legit laughed at the mention of Kotaku, especially since it was the only real brand mentioned. Waaaaaay to show off your sources there, guys.

As Shark would say, the Kotaku reference sent my sides into orbit. It's way better than Civ 5!
SVU has never been one for respecting any of the cultures or groups of people they portray. It's laughable at best and boring at worst. As Ky was saying, it's sad that many people take these kinds of portrayals seriously. The comic book industry was nearly destroyed because of poor views like this. I can only hope that the games industry avoids that sort of stigma as the years go on.
The only issue I have is that the designer's game is hailed as a good thing because it's not violent. Of course, this is coming from the show that uses violence and sex as the foundation of its premise. SVU, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Like The Big Bang Theory, this is what they call "Nerd Blackface".

It's definitely stereotyping. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "black face." It's incredibly similar to black face, but they're not exploiting physical and racial attributes. This is less of a minstrel show and more demonizing and fear mongering.
Needless to say, if they hype up nerds this much, I can't imagine how they're portraying other groups.

Relevant: www.animemaru.com/new-episode-of-law-and-order-svu-focuses-on-otaku-culture/Even though it's satire, you just know that this is what's coming next. Or, if not directly next, soon enough. But yeah, I'm with Ceej here. Even before this, I always thought of SVU as more than a little dangerous, in how it tends to take very serious matters, and paint them in a way that horribly demonstrates misinformation and discourages understanding. Even if they're trying to do the right thing here, which I have my doubts on, they're doing so in a way that's actually destructive. There's absolutely no excuse for not being honest, when it comes to sensitive topics.
