So I've recently just got around to watching the magical heist movie that is Now You See Me and I must say that it did a splendid job in creating a captivating story that glued me to my seat. So glued to the seat was I that I almost peed my pants at one point because I refused to get up and go to the bathroom. It also did a splendid job of mind f**king me to the point that I had to take an aspirin afterwords.
I'll start out by complementing the casting. The movie had some rather big names from the business including Michael Cain (Alfred from the Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy and other fantastic movies that I can't remember the names of) Morgan Freeman (Everything ever). It also had some other major stars who while recognizable aren't in anything to big save for a few handful of movies. I'm speaking of Mark Ruffalo who many know as the third man to play the Hulk (Avengers), Isla Fisher (Hot Rod...seriously that's all I remember her from), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), and Dave Franco (21 Jump Street). Now while some may see some of these names and be somewhat put off of the movie either due to the fact that not many can recognize them based on name alone or simply due to the fact that they have seen their other movies and just weren't impressed with the performance should stop that thinking and allow the movie to showcase why these lesser know actors are well on their way to being heavy hitters in hollywood.
The cast does a fantastic job of displaying an air of dare I say magic on the screen. Each member is so comfortable in their roles you may believe them to be magicians themselves and their greatest trick is fooling everyone into thinking they were originally just actors. At no point did I think that they should have chosen a better actor for the part.
Enough about the casting because if I don't try to cut myself short on all the things I enjoyed about the movie well we might be here for a while. The next thing I would like to compliment is the magic tricks in the movie themselves. Several tricks were so mystifying and incredible that at certain points I forgot they were illusions and thought that the characters were actually wizards. Quite a bit of tricks made me question things I knew to be real. I know that it's all hollywood magic (i.e CGI, camera tricks, etc) but it's so well done that I actually forgot that it was Hollywood playing the trick and not the actual actors performing real magic tricks.
Alright so I've fanboyed quite a bit about the tricks and cast, hopefully not to much, so we should move onto the most important part of the movie. The storyline. Now I'll be the first to admit that when I first saw the trailer I thought that the story behind the movie would be decent. Not fantastical, yeah I said it, as it was. Like I mentioned before I was glued to my seat. The story was so interesting and captivating that I had to see how it played out. I didn't want to leave. I actually don't think I was physically or mentally capable of willing myself out of my seat. At first the plot seemed pretty straight forward. Four magicians perform shows while at the same time pulling off heists but as it unfolded it hinted towards something different. Something under the surface that you had to see revealed. The plot in itself is the best trick the movie creates and the ending is something I honestly could not see coming.
Anyways I think I rambled on long enough. Hopefully what I've written here is good enough to get you interested and while you may not love the movie as much as I do I think you will at least get some enjoyment out of watching the story unfold on the screen. If I were to do a star rating well this for me would get all the stars, alright maybe not all of them. I need some to get to the secret area in the next level (Kirby reference).
P.S. Dave Franco plays a magical ninja. Basically.
