It's time for a new manga. One of Shonen Jump's newest series to actually gain popularity. 1.5 Million copies sold from Volumes 1 - 4. Doing very well so far and I see why this manga is awesome and funny. www.mangareader.net/shokugeki-no-somawww.mangahere.com/manga/shokugeki_no_soma/mangafox.me/manga/shokugeki_no_soma/Summary: Yukihira Souma's dream is to become a full-time chef in his father's restaurant and surpass his father's culinary skill. But just as Yukihira graduates from middle schools his father, Yukihira Jouichirou, closes down the restaurant to cook in Europe. Although downtrodden, Souma's fighting spirit is rekindled by a challenge from Jouichirou which is to survive in an elite culinary school where only 10% of the students graduate. Can Souma survive?

Why are manga about food so popular? Is it because the girls orgasm every time they eat food? Haha. I read a bit of it, but I just can't get into it, haha.

Whelp, that's it for CJ. Honestly, it's interesting to see it so successful alongside Toriko, another manga about cooking. I don't think it'll last. From what I can tell with the premise, we've seen more interesting school settings (Blue Exorcist, Soul Eater and hell, even Naruto come to mind). Pure cooking stories are best suited for slice of life, not Shonen.

Yeah the 'fanservice' doesn't really stop there. I'm somewhat afraid THAT is why it's popular. Its similar to Fairy Tail in that regard.
Anyway, I gave it a chance and read the first 5 chapters. There are some really neat moments when it comes to the food aspect, and I kinda wish it stuck with the food more, but even if it did, it's still not for me.
I'm a shonen battle oriented manga person. Can't really change from that!

I'd really read up to Chapter 28 before deciding whether to stop reading it or not as after only 5 chapters you haven't really seen a lot. Up next is Soma moving into his dorm and meeting the rest of the supporting cast before being introduced to shokugeki "food battles" and then after that is the training camp which is all about nothing but food, it ends at chapter 28. which is the minimum I would recommend reading before deciding to continue or stop.
Well basically my own sorta rule is to read Volumes 1 - 3 before making a final judgment as that way I really give a manga a good chance.
@cj the fan service goes both ways for girls and guys and after about chapter 14 (around the time the training camp starts) it becomes slightly reduced. But there is a guy in this manga who is constantly naked and when he does have clothes on it's usually a nude apron (One of the guys who live in Soma's dorm). so don't think it's just the girls getting the fanservice shots.

If it was a guy getting raped by an octopus, I'd put the manga away just as quickly.
Again, I don't have any problems with fan service, I liked Nanatsu no Taizai, after all, but that full spread rape image to try and lure readers in is just disgusting.
It's unfortunate, as you've noted, that it's likely pushed me away from reading a great story.

New Chapter 44 - www.mangahere.com/manga/shokugeki_no_soma/c044/@cj Well I would still try it at least until Chapter 28. Did you finish chapter 1 or stop at that page? Like I said the fan service is greatly reduced after Soma battles in his first Shokugeki and moves onto the training camp where it becomes more serious and is turned into a fight for survival through cooking skill. and the fan service you do get after it has the girls a lot more covered. and no rapey monsters since that one single page you don't like. I just think the Training Camp arc (Chapter 15-34) is brilliant and want anyone I can get to read the series to at least finish that far (Or at least finish till Chapter 28). If they don't like the training camp arc then fair enough at least they gave it a fair shot.

Im enjoying this but mainly because I enjoy cooking so its fun to see a story with this as the central focus. Not expecting too much plot-wise from it, hope I am pleasantly surprised.

Again, it's not the fan service itself I have a problem with but the use of it. In the end, the author and editor still used the image as a tool to draw readers in. It's failed for me. It's a personal opinion and I respect anyone who likes this series, but I'm not going to read a series that uses the image of a girl getting raped by an octopus to try and draw readers in. I've already suffered enough with Naruto, that uses fan boy polls and focus groups to determine what characters are important to the series. I understand that reading only the first four pages of a manga does not help determine what kind of series it will be. But even a series like Soul Eater, which featured a full page spread of breast shaped images in its final chapter, introduced the series with a well choreographed fight with a likeable female protagonist, so when the fan service showed up pages later, I could still take the series seriously. Again, total respect to anyone who reads or enjoys this series but CJ's out.

I cant help but compare this series to bartender, which was similar in its premise- food/drink becoming the best chef/bartender, unexpectedly awesome, customers getting absolute gasm's from every mouthful.
The difference is that eventually bartender got so boring because it took itself so seriously. I guess ive enjoyed it warts and all due to its blatant approach.
There are so many manga series out there and new ones constantly being released, we can afford to stop reading even after a page if it doesn't suite our tastes, for whatever reason.
