Later that day, as the sun set in the sky, Matthias folded some origami cranes in his bedroom. The paper birds were scattered everywhere amongst clothes and toys. Over and over, he kept folding them with extreme diligence. He shook terribly.
Neither Claudia or Roderick saw the code in his note, or at least it seemed that way. Still, what did he expect them to do if they found it? Rise to his aide and attack the woman they had just formed an alliance with? He shivered to think of what could have happened had they turned on Stacy. He had seen what kind of damage she alone could do to people: water floating in the air, choking surprised victims, shadows being latched out from underneath people's feet.
He stopped dead when he heard the familiar loud steps of Stacy's feet in the hallway. Slowly he brought his panicked breath to a normal pace.
"Where are the humans, freak?" she said suddenly, leaning on the post of his bedroom door. "The last time I checked, you weren't the only Regalan on this island. Sneaking them behind my back while I was distracted with Claudifuck and Roderdick was real cute but now it's time to send them back."
Matthias kept quiet as usual. He kept his back to Stacy, perhaps hoping the inevitable would simply disappear. But it didn't.
"You will tell me where they are or I will the human Graves' shadow removed. Shall we go out into the setting sun for a nice barbeque with her?"
Commander Graves. The boy couldn't have expected her to go with the others. But then, why wouldn't she? He couldn't be sure. His heart felt it was beating faster than he could handle.
"Oh, you didn't know, did you? She stayed behind because she couldn't bear to leave you alone. She's real stupid."
"Leave... her... alone..." he croaked, fighting against the scarring in his throat.
"Oh, so you can talk!" Stacy cheered. "I bet you can see too. How is my swimsuit? It's real cute, huh."
Turning back toward her, his brown irises still splotched in white, he glared at her with extreme intensity. The witch actually stepped back for a while but retained her usual cheeky grin
"I'll crush..."
"Crush me and you can kiss your people goodbye, Matty. My troops will disappear and I will personally go Arkady directly and give him the clear to flatten your city."
Matthias shook his head.
"I'll... fight him..."
"Oh, because that worked so well before," she joked back. "Now where the humans, Matty?"
The king bit his lip. He clutched onto his elbows, feeling a deep sinking in his stomach. He remembered Roderick asking him back at the ball to place his mind back in another place. He closed his eyes and pictured himself having a discussion with Claudia and Roderick. He was showing off his favorite book, eager to get them copies so they could read it too. So badly he wanted to relate to them, learn from them, know them outside of this horrible war.
Stacy gripped the sides of his head and screeched.
"Where are they?"
