"Oh, yeah," Narthan confirmed. "Elrond Vir, the leader of the guild that took down a powerful dark guild, who has been the center of attention for this great and powerful magic... cannot use magic."
His dull look was the thing of wonders. His eyes brightened up in fake wonder,
"You most definitely don't use magic indeed! Well then, take this powerful button. It's secretly imbued with magic, designed to make you extremely lucky!"
Elrond was given a plastic pin button that, aside from the sparkly words "Narthan's Magical Item Mart," was no different from any other button. Anyone could see it was an ordinary pin button but maybe with the hype and excitement, Elrond would believe Narthan's lie... or was he really lying?
Grinning and tapping his fingers against each other, the salesman answered Alden.
"Why, anyone can buy from us! We're taking particular interest in you, Alden, because you're an expert in the products we sell. You're the perfect person to advertise our product, which is why we're so willing to give one of our fancy items to you for free!"
"The rest of you can buy any of our fine products tomorrow at the Harvest Festival for half price! For now, indulge in these cookies we've brought as thanks for taking out Atrum!"
Some might have noticed Susano-san exiting the guild during the discussions to fetch a large tray of chocolate chip cookies from a roofed wagon outside. They were hot and looked absolutely delicious. The masked figure did not take as much delight in the cookies as Cinder did upon first seeing them.
"Wonderful! I love chocolate chip cookies! Xing Qi, do you want one?"
"Not unless they're dark chocolate," Qi laughed nervously. "I'm intolerant to dairy, remember?"
"Dear, me!" Cinder exclaimed with a deep frown. "It has been so long; I had forgotten. I will eat two then, one in your honor."
Holding Pink Petal back with his hooked hand because she could engulf the tray of cookies meant for Renascence, Narthan continued his proposition.
"Now, while you're all enjoying yourselves, let me introduce the product I will be giving Alden. This is Achlys's Sand."
In Narthan's only hand was a jar of black sand, pitch black as the coldest night. A cute white skull was etched on the side of it with its brand name underneath it.
"Achyls?" Qi asked.
"The name doesn't really matter," Narthan explained in annoyance. "I hear it has some significance, but, if I'm being frank with you, I never cared to research it. I only advertise that Achyls was a powerful mage because that's the only thing I'm certain of. The name begins with an "A" so it's listed high in product catalogs so it's good for money."
The summoner didn't seem too pleased with this answer but she didn't continue her inquiry.
"Now, it appears to be a jar of black sand, but when even a speck of sand is applied against an opponent, it can have incredible effects."
As Narthan twisted off the lid, Pink Petal sighed next to him, as though she had gone through this routine before. He threw a pinch of sand into her face, which cause an astounding reaction.
She sneezed and her body seized up and stopped moving. Her eyes closed and she fell to the ground, rattling like a statue that had been tipped over.
"Look here! This is the most important part! On her forehead is the mark of a skull. This symbol allows you to know how long the magic will last on her. I've only given Pink Petal a dash of the sand, so she'll be out for not much longer. The skull is already fading away!"
Indeed was it, but was Pink Petal really not harmed otherwise?
"Just about any opponent can fall asleep under your will! The jar fills back up automatically by shaking it until the sand duplicates itself! But, before we give you this, Alden, I must read the disclaimer so you and your guild members are in complete understanding of the consequences of this device."
Breathing in dramatically, Narthan spouted the disclaimer as quickly as possible.
"Narthan'sMagicalItemMartisnotresponsibleforanyfoulplayassociatedwiththisproduct.Ifthefulljarisappliedtoafriendorfoe,sideeffectscouldincludeintensemindnumbingnightmares,catastrophicillnessandultimatelydeath.ThisdeathisforeshadowedtheboldmarkofaskullcoloredinassociationwiththesandofthejarwhichNEVERgoesaway.Thevictimwilldieinlessthantwentyfourhours... and you get the point."
Holding out the jar in front of Alden, Narthan had the cheekiest smile ever.
"Enjoy your new Achlys's Sand! Any questions?"
Pink Petal rose from her magically induced sleep. She blinked her eyes, looked at Jupiter and, for some reason, snickered.

"No thanks, I'm allergic to cookies."
He wasn't actually allergic to cookies, he just wasn't going to put anything these people made in his mouth.
"Enjoy your new Achlys's Sand! Any questions?"
"Yeah, just one... what if I don't want it?"
What good was a jar of sand that put people to sleep? He could think of a myriad of ways in which it was impractical. For starters, there was the issue of being that close to an opponent in the first place, in a position where he could throw sand at their face after obtaining an amount from the jar beforehand. As well of course, there was the problem of what would happen if it were to be thrown and then sent off course. It was only sand after all, chances were a strong wind would make this item useless. And then there was the issue that Alden wouldn't find much a challenge or much gratification in attacking or defeating sleeping targets. If that were his style, then he would have become something akin to an assassin, not a hunter.
AND A WHOLE BUNCH OF OTHER PROBLEMS WITH THE ENTIRE SITUATION.
But it probably didn't matter anyway, he had taken the jar since it had been handed to him, and gave it a looking over. He even shook it for good measure, watching to see if it really did refill, reminding him of the bottle hanging around his neck. Sure there were plenty of problems with this particular jar of sand, but if it was free... well in the worst case scenario it would just sit in his room and never be used, but it would be out of grasp of these strangers.
Conveniently he more or less missed most if not all of the warning, writing it off as merchant babble.

Elrond gasped as he was handed the shiny pin. He held it in his shaking hands and loomed over it, wondering what kind of magical powers it held within. Smiling widely, he hooked the button onto his shirt and looked very proud. "With this I have become the most powerful of them all."
At Alden's objection of Achly's Sand, Elrond gaped at him and shook his head. "What? No! You gotta take it! A sand that can put people to sleep... Well, the possibilities are endless!"
Elrond grabbed Qi's arm and pointed at the summoner mage. "For example, if Qi here is having a rough night, we could just sprinkle a little on her and she'd be fast to sleep!"

As Pink Petal looked at him and snickered Jupiter responded with a nasty glare, not that anyone could be able to tell though as he was again wearing those thick sunglasses he always wore. "Boss, that's just damn stupid." Jupiter said as Elrond was going on about how useful some sleep inducing sand could be. "If ya want to send someone to sleep, all ya need to do is hit their heard hard enough. I've done it for years and it has never failed me." Then the punk turned his face towards Qi and said. "If ya need help with sleeping, just ask me."

"You don't want it? Who doesn't want something for free? That's crazy!"
Narthan completely dismissed Alden's question, choosing instead to hand it directly to him, which fortunately for him and his employees, the mage hunter took it.
Qi held in a laugh at Elrond's giddy excitement over his new shiny pin. Her face fell when he gripped her arm and put her at the center of attention.
"Wait, what?"
Cinder dropped Rooster's unconscious form onto the ground unceremoniously with a thud and grasped the summoner's other arm.
"Qi knows how to make great Sleepy Time tea! And I have a series of lullabies just for the occasion!"
Jupiter's suggestion made Qi's eyebrows twitch in disbelief. She pulled her arms in, trying to get out of Elrond and Cinder's hold.
"No!" she said with a baffled laugh. "I'm fine going to sleep on my own! Don't even joke about something like that!"
Clapping at the scene, Narthan cheeky grin seemed set in stone. He got exactly what he wanted today and perhaps inspiration for something more. Pink Petal stood behind him, towering over him. Unlike her leader, she looked rather sad. It could have been Jupiter's reluctance to return her smile, but it was likely the entire scenario that made her upset. Perhaps this sort of thing happened often with their group. It was very clear Pink Petal was verbally abused by Narthan and perhaps Susano-san.
"Whelp, if that's that, we'll be heading out!" Narthan exclaimed, "No more questions were asked so you'll get no more answers! We'll see you tomorrow at the festival, Renascence!"
Walking backwards, Narthan and Pink Petal waved their arms sporadically in a strange dance. Susano-san bent his head low and stood silently in the guild hall. He jumped into the air and opened his arms to unleash a flash and explosion of confetti and light that spread throughout the hall. The words "VOTE 4 SUSANO-SAN" spread across the ceiling and remained for a good twenty seconds while Susano-san repeated Narthan and Pink Petal's dance and exited himself.
The guild members would have had about a minute before the three would take off into town in their roofed wagon, pulled exclusively by Pink Petal.

Elrond eventually gave up trying to convince Qi of his magnificent idea, and before he knew it, the trio was already leaving the guild.
He gave a big wave and smiled as they departed. "Bye, you guys! Thanks again for joining my Guild!"
And with that, everything seemed at peace once more.
---
Asmoday was very curious about the item Alden received, for it really appeared they were forcing the item onto him. Well, she'd just have to wait to see the consequences, and for now, she sat at a nearby table and watched if Alden continued working on his banners and sipped on some tea.

"Huh, free stuff. I wonder if it could be sold... like, the sand inside, not the jar. People that have sleeping problems, ought to test that out."
Although he didn't really want the jar all that much to begin with, it was free and he was content. Seeing that the jar even refilled as they said it would, he figured it wasn't so bad of a gift. He couldn't think of any practical combat applications for the item, but already he had an idea of how to make money off of it, and he was sure more ideas would come in time.
Until then though, he returned to working on the banner for the guild. While walking over, he held up his hand and recalled the shield he had tossed at Rooster earlier. Propelled by an unseen force, it zipped through the air across the room till he caught it. With that, he set it, and the jar on top of it down on one of the guild hall tables for later. Until then, he had to come up with a way for this banner to stand out, and Cinder had given him an idea.

After some intense glaring Jupiter could finally take it easy as the suspicious merchants finally left the guild building, though Alden had accepted what ever TV-shop quality crap they were offering. Well at least he didn't pay for it.
When Elrond called the three merchants members of his guild Jupiter started to have some doubts: "Should I really call this guy 'boss'?" Afterwards Jupiter sat down on a nearby chair and then put his feet on top of a table and just laid back.

TIME SKIP
---
A storm crashed outside the guild as night fell.
Qi and Cinder slept in her dorm for the night. When the summoner first joined the guild, she claimed one of the halls as the "girls' hall," even though she was the only girl member at the time.
Wanting to have a "sleepover," Cinder pulled one of the empty beds into the door frame of Qi's room. It wasn't big enough to fit two beds so they made due.
The two talked into the night as the sky lit up through Qi's small window.
"Do you like your new friends, Qi?" Cinder asked, smiling gleefully as she kicked her feet on the bed.
"Most of them," Qi said quietly with a sigh.
"Most of them?"
"There's one... a girl named Asmoday. She tried to kill me once."
"Kill you?!" Cindy exclaimed, sitting up at the edge of her bed.
"It's not as bad as it sounds," Qi said quickly, waving at her friend with her dragon patterned sleeved arm. "It was when she was working for another guild. Now she's part of ours and our guild master expects us to be her friend. The others seem to like her but I can't stand her. I wish I could see her in a better light but it's hard."
The summoner wanted to express her fears over the girl's possible connection to the dark mage of 100 years past but held off, not wanting to drag her friend into this mystery.
"These things come in time," Cinder said, relaxing again in her sheep pattern pajamas. "She has not tried to attack you again, has she?"
"Not that I know of."
"I hope not. Maybe she can be your friend, Xing Qi. Maybe she was simply misguided before she joined your merry group of friends."
"Maybe."
But Qi wasn't so sure. There was something about the girl that wasn't right. She knew she had to be lying. Things didn't add up. With these thoughts spinning in her mind, she wasn't sure if she'd be able to sleep tonight.
--- --- ---
Elrond, who slept in the guild house office, would have maybe seen Qi sitting alone in the guild hall, studying several documents by candlelight. If approached, she would quickly close the books and say she was only reading casually and couldn't fall asleep.
Later that night, from his window, the storm could be seen, ravaging the sea. Lighting and thunder tore the sky apart. For a brief few moments, the faded image of a giant could be seen, silently crying and sobbing over the sea.
The giant had a horse's head.
---
Anyone sleeping in the clock tower may have been witness to a strange sight.
A man dressed in hiking gear with a long monkey's tail paced about the room. He seemed spectral and unreal. He wouldn't respond to speech or touch. In fact, if Alden, Asmoday or whoever was there tried to touch him, their hand would touch nothing but air.
Clutching at his hair, he looked incredibly distressed.
That shifty freak! Why would he do that to her? Why?
Asmoday might have heard the voice before in her time at Atrum. He was a wandering spirit who fell into the ranks of the dark guild in an attempt to seek out his former master.
He took on several jobs, most importantly the one where he fought Qi, former member John and Alden. The mage hunter might recognize him here, looking a lot more like a spirit than he claimed to be before.
Black... red... black, no... maybe better red. Better off dead? No, I'm with Qi now. I'm fine. Fine. No more hurting. Calm down. There's something with that color though... red, black, red, black, dead, black, red...
Kneeling on the ground, he looked devastated.
---
In the guy's dormitories, where Dofun and Jupiter slept, another spirit wandered the halls.
A tall, lanky woman gracefully strode, walking through the walls. Snake, like the others, appeared to be something out of this world. All the green color had been washed from her. She looked as though she had been painted in blue watercolor. Her dress fluttered in the still air.
So silent... she did not stand a chance. We should have known that person would be trouble. Monkey, you are fine. That trial is long behind you. But our Master is in danger now... that sand... how could... Alden... Of course, she would trust Alden...
Her quiet voice could barely be heard as she began muttering to herself, not able to comprehend Dofun or Jupiter around her.
---
Understandably, the spirits might have roused some people from their sleep. Had anyone entered the guild hall in the night, they would have come to an unpleasant scene.
The candle on the table was nearly burned out. Papers littered the hall, blown away from the books and other documents spead on the lone table used in the night. Leaves covered the various decorations guild members had made for the festival that would begin that morning.
Huddled under the table, it was hard to understand why Qi would choose to sleep in the guild hall. Was Cinder a snorer? No, the true answer was rather unwelcome. She wasn't still there by choice.
Qi was cold, huddled on the floor in a fetal position. Her hands held the top of her staff, her fingers clutched her summoning keys in frozen, frantic fear. If touched or moved, one would find she was petrified and couldn't be shifted.
The whole of her face looked as though it was tattooed. The image of a red skull covered her skin, bold and stark in color. It was similar in appearance to the black skull that appeared on Pink Petal's face when Narthan threw Achlys's Sand on her. But unlike that skull, this one was much larger and looked much more menacing, its features were jagged, its teeth were pointed.
Qi eyes were open and unblinking. Her breath was nearly nonexistent.
Someone had entered the guild and attacked her... or had been inside the guild the entire time and might still be there.
A glass of milk had spilled onto the floor nearby scattered cookie crumbs. In her notebook, the letter "A" was etched in dark ink, covering the extensive notes she had been taking. Why would Qi or any one else ruin her work? Was it a message?
---
In particular, Alden would notice his Achlys's Sand would be the same as he had left it before. There were no fingerprints or signs that it had been tampered in any way.

Elrond appeared to be the first up, as it was still early in the morning. As he stood up in his office and stretched, he recalled a dream he had earlier that night... He had seen a giant horse's head emerge from the ocean, sobbing. Elrond wished he could have helped it, but then he realized it was probably a dream, and he decided never to eat nachos before bed again.
But, he was up early. He always got up early, every morning, just to remind himself that what was happening around him was real. That he had a real guild with real mages. He hoped his grandfather would be proud of him, wherever he was.
But as he entered the main hall, he gasped to see Qi laying under the table all scrunched up. Wondering why she had chosen to sleep there, he approached closer to see that a strange mask was on her face and that she was unable to be awoken. Putting two and two together, he gasped to realize that it was strikingly similar to that sand that Alden received!
Did Qi take Elrond's advice and try it out? No, she said herself she never wanted that to happen.
Investigating further, he noticed a single letter written on a piece of paper. The letter "A". Elrond gasped! Finally, everything made sense.
Elrond called at the top of his lungs, "EVERYONE! WAKE UP AND GET OVER HERE IMMEDIATELY!"
Elond swung his arms around and, using his magic, the doors sealed shut and the windows were covered in impenetrable stone. There was no getting in or out, not now. If the attacker was still in the Guild, which Elrond expected he was, they couldn't escape!
Until the other mages arrived in the main hall, Elrond reviewed the evidence in his mind. A... A... A... There was only one explanation.
"He's back.... sAmson."
---
Asmoday heard Elrond's call from the top of the clock tower. Though, she'd been up for the last couple of hours sitting on a stool and blankly staring at the strange monkey spirit that paced the room, muttering to itself about something bad...
Asmoday had attempted to communicate with the spirit, but to no avail. It simply kneeled on the ground and kept to itself, as if Asmoday and Alden weren't even there.
But with Elrond's call, Asmoday knew something was up. Looking at at the clock, she saw it was still early morning, around 4AM.
"Alden," said Asmoday. "Perhaps we should go check it out and leave this monkey alone."

"Yes. Perfect! They'll never see this coming." Despite it being middle of the night Jupiter was still awake thinking about something in his room. The room was nothing special, just the average dorm room of this building and as Jupiter did not own much it was mostly empty; he had bought himself a punching bag and that was about it. Nevertheless it was still much better place to live than the ghetto he had grown in.
Around this time someone speaking could be heard coming from outside the room. They said something about 'a master' being in trouble and Alden doing something. Jupiter felt like opening the door to see what was going on, but decided against it. "It's pretty damn late already, I better hit the hay." It didn't take him long to fall asleep. On an unrelated note apparently Jupiter wears his sunglasses even while sleeping.
----
Jupiter would soon find out that he wouldn't be allowed to sleep for very long as soon he would be waken up by his guild master shouting something down the hallway. Wearing nothing but boxers, decorated with a cute kitty pattern, and of course the sunglasses Jupiter walked up to the door, opened it and then shouted: "SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH!! I'M TRYING TO SLEEP HERE, DAMMIT!" this was followed by Jupiter violently slamming his door shut. Only a few seconds later he was, once again, fast asleep.

The clocktower was possibly the worst place to be that night. Not even because of the spectral monkey, but because it wasn't built to be liveable, and in the storm it was even worse. The howling winds, pouring rain and thunder made already a hard place to sleep in, even more difficult.
"Fuggin' haunted tower... fuggin' ghosts..."
---
He didn't hear Elrond shouting for everyone to wake up, all the way down in the main hall, but he sure heard Asmoday who was like five feet away from him. An unwelcome guest, he couldn't ignore. Rolling over, Alden looked drearily from the trespasser, to the glass of the clock faces on the tower.
"Is the sun up yet? Wake me up when the sun is up."
With that he rolled back over and went to sleep again.

Elrond was surprised to hear Jupiter down the hall state that he just wanted to go back to bed! He couldn't let this go without some kind of action. He decided to gently lift Qi off the floor and lay her on one of the many dining tables in the main hall and then lay a small blanket on top of her.
He had to get Jupiter up. But, of course, he knew that being stern and yelling wasn't going to work, since it didn't before. He'd have to take another course of action.
So he ran to the kitchen. It was full of large fridges with all kinds of delicious foods (most donated by the town after they saved everyone). The most delicious of all was a three layer coconut pineapple cake that Elrond had been saving for the Festival tomorrow, but these were desperate times. He grabbed an apron and tossed it on, then gently cut the most perfectly slice of cake and laid it on a small plate. He then rushed to make some sweet hot cocoa in a small mug that said "Jupiter's the Best" on the side. He placed this all on a tray and as quickly as he could, hastily walked to Jupiter's room.
He grabbed the doorknob then ripped the door off its hinges, throwing it down the hall. He then entered Jupiter's room, not taking much time to look around, and kicked the bed so hard that Jupiter might have fallen out.
"Uh, Jupiter, I got cake! You like cake, right? And hot cocoa. Now come on out to the main hall and have a midnight snack. Oh, and Qi might be dead."
---
Upstairs, Asmoday frowned to see Alden brush everything off and go back to sleep. Certainly the ghost in the room should have been enough cause for alarm.
She waved her hands at a small porthole window nearby (which had been strangely covered in stone). The stone vanished and instead if anyone looked that way, they'd see the town below with the sun rising in the distance. The bright light cascaded through the room, creating long shadows and warming everything up.
"It's morning now, Alden. Now, let's go downstairs and see what's all the yelling about..."

"I should have known something was wrong when I heard that Rooster girl walking around like a ghost in the hall. Oh, Xing Qi, what happened to you? Where's that girl? That Asmoday? Why did I not pay more attention to your worries?"
There in the main hall stood Cinder in her sheep pattern pajamas. Her face was blotchy red and her golden curls in several sleepy knots. Unlike some of the other members, she was the first to bolt to the hall in fear of not being able to defend herself against whatever danger might be still among them.
Touching Qi gently, she saw that her attempts to comfort her were to no avail.
"I cannot close your eyelids. Oh Heavens... I can't let anything get into them. Glass Make: White Coffin."
Cinder moved her hand over the near dead form of her friend. A glass case formed around her on the table, with several holes and slits for her to breathe in. The coffin could be easily lifted and set to the side.
"What should we do? This place isn't safe for Xing Qi or any of us. And even if we were safe, is Xing Qi going to die? Is this not what that seller warned us about? Why would Alden do this? It is him right? He has the sand? Or did that Asmoday steal the sand and use it on Xing Qi to finally kill her once and all? Why would someone be this cruel?"
Sniffling, she drenched her handkerchief in tears.
In the corner of the room, another ghost could be seen, apparently sleeping. It was the Rooster summon from earlier that day, in cute footie pajamas. She was suspended in the air, floating still, as though sleeping on an invisible bed.
Like the other ghosts, she wouldn't respond to any physical touch or communication of any sort.
---
Monkey's spirit kept muttering to itself quietly as it knelt on the floor in the tower. He tapped his fingers on the end of his tail, holding it near his chest.
Why would he... to even think Alden would... or would he...? ... kill Ms. Ruby... kill everyone else... Don't make me go back to Asmoday, Ms. Ruby... please...
His eyes were bloodshot.

Out of nowhere Atre Infitialis appeared to the scene, looking as depressed as usual and as soon as he saw her, he walked towards Qi to inspect her. "She is dead. That's for sure. How horrible." It didn't take Atre very long to come to a conclusion, in fact this certainly wasn't an adequate inspection. "I just knew today would be an awful day." Looking very worried, even more so than usual, Atre walked to the nearest chair and sat down. Knowing him he would probably disappear once again in a couple of minutes. Elrond's magic walls couldn't do anything to prevent him from entering or exiting the guild house. ---- "Aww... Thanks, ma. Ya know I love cake!" Jupiter said, half-asleep, when someone came to offer him some cake and hot chocolate. As he rose from the bed Jupiter's thoughts started to become a bit clearer. "Wait a second... Ma never calls me 'Jupiter'." While taking a bite of the delicious cake Jupiter finally took a good look at who had brought it to him and it certainly wasn't his mother. He felt cheated; why would Elrond use such cheap tricks to wake him up. The cake and the hot chocolate were very good though. "Fine... I'm awake." Jupiter said as he finished his unhealthy breakfast and then finally leaving his room. He wasn't quite as awake as he claimed though. Like often times with people that haven't slept well Jupiter didn't really pay much attention to things and with a blank stare he walked down the hallways towards Qi and those around her. He had forgotten to get dressed, wearing nothing but his boxers and shades, but that's fine since this is Fairy Tail and it was about time someone was inappropriately dressed. "Oh... This is one of those damn trick pictures, ya need to heat it or something to see the real message. Or ya need to look at it through a mirror or something stupid like that..." Jupiter said after taking a quick glance at Qi's notebook. "Or maybe ya just need to check out the other pages." Due to being so tired Jupiter sounded like he didn't care at all, just throwing random ideas out there. "Oh yeah, I need to shave." Jupiter thought grabbing the nearest knife, which was way too large for this, and then swung it, seemingly randomly, around his face. He didn't use shaving foam or a mirror and, unsurprisingly, the result wasn't very good. Somehow Jupiter, at least, seemed to be able to avoid cutting his face up too bad.
