So we can't talk about video games or movies then? Because those, unlike anime, ARE fundamentally different from manga. To be on an manga site. Another idea, stick HQ on the end of any of the ideas we had previously. This is the best idea so far. I mentioned video games. Please read what I write before commenting on the things I talk about. Basically, my full unabridged opinion is, video games are a sort of grey area here. At heart, they're completely different industries, but the two have been connected and each has effected the other to some extent. I think, as long as the games we mention can be directly linked to the anime/manga industries or aesthetic in some respect, and we're not just talking about any ol' big Triple A title, we should be good. It's good to stay focused on one subject, but many manga/anime enthusiasts and creators are gamers and sometimes vice versa, so there's grounds to discuss both. I think we should draw the line at movies though. There is some overlap that maybe we could talk about sometimes possibly maybe, but ultimately for the sake of keeping it focused, the film world is too far removed to be relevant. Of course there is some middle ground, like Pacific Rim which clearly got much of its inspiration and appeal from classic mecha shows, but meh. Gotta keep it centered at least a little.

Whatever we do I'm fine with but as I said before, it just shouldn't have one kind of media in the name because you lock yourself to that kind of media. Like if the ideal intent is to create a strictly manga review site, that's fine, but I won't be able to contribute for example. I get that. However, considering how hand in hand manga and anime are these days, I don't think anyone would be shocked if they suddenly found us talking about anime on the manga site. While the industries are fundamentally different, they both have been linked throughout their history, and this is reflected in the culture surrounding their fandoms. This is also true, to a lesser extent, to video games. And, as CJ established already, the main draw will always be manga, so I see no problem with putting the word in the title. On this subject, I feel I should explain one of the proposed names I put up, Manga Review Calendar. It's a reference to the first anime series aired on television, Otagi Manga Calendar. So it kinda refers to both mediums! The only thing talked about was some unexplained and questionable connection between the similarity between the anime and manga industries, and video games. I read what you talked about, that's not what I was referring to. --- You're setting up a slippery slope on what can and can't be talked about when it comes to movies and games. Why prevent people from talking about these things if they want to? There shouldn't be a censor on something someone would like to talk about or review, simply because it wasn't similar enough to anime or manga influences or industry. It doesn't detract from the site, or the effort. If for whatever unlikely reason it causes some undesired shift down the road, it can be altered whenever. Unless the idea is to create a community whose only media interest is manga and anime. This will lead to the creation of an echo chamber.

Are you suggesting we ditch the manga focus altogether and just make it a general media review... thing? Because I'm not up for that at all, though I recognize it might be a bit unfair of me to just speak for myself on this. There's a market for the sort of stuff you're suggesting, admittedly, a much much much bigger market. But this is a manga site we're talking about. As far as I understood it, it was never the intention to have our subject matter be anything goes. It was always going be be grounded on the manga/anime subculture. Straying away from that a little should be fine, but only if there's a clear connection there. Otherwise, we lose our focus. And honestly, I'd say your echo chamber comment is almost offensively short-sighted. Anime/manga is a niche market, to be certain, but to say that it's stagnant or in any way lacking in diverse opinions or things to talk about is outright ignorant of you. At the very least, it demonstrates how much you just aren't paying attention. Heck, even with the opinions on the medium on this teeny tiny forum, there are very few actual solid opinions shared universally by everyone. While I do agree somewhat, in that as we are now we run the risk of locking ourselves in the Shonen Battle Manga box, keeping the subject of our articles centered around one thing isn't going to harm us at all. The wonderful world of manga is bigger than you might think, Shark. I'd suggest looking deeper.

The wonderful world of manga is bigger than you might think, Shark. I'd suggest looking deeper. I'm not sure what definition of echo chamber you're using, but I'm using it to the definition where people concentrate on a spectrum of ideas and shut out anything outside of that spectrum. Whether it's stagnant or lacking in diverse opinions isn't the issue, it's that the only opinions and ideas to be entertained are those of that media spectrum. It doesn't matter how big the wonderful world of manga is. Instead, can you explain why you're so focused on covering only one subject? If your only focus is on anime and manga, you will attract an audience whose interests revolve around that. Not all of them, but some of them, it will be their only interests. This is truer of anime and manga, than most other media. For the medium of anime and manga, the kind of people that attracts, I imagine you might be able to see the problem here. I'm not opposed to the idea at all, it's not mine to begin with. It's not like I'm sitting here saying "Don't make your website this way, make it my way!", I'm just saying what I think it would be good to have, what I would like it to have. I thought the point of these threads was for us to say what we would like the site to have. I doubt in the end though that I have very much say in the matter anyway. If however the intent is to make a strictly manga and anime reviewing site of which are a dime a dozen at their inception, with no room for compromise, then my ability as well as certain other people's to provide input and assistance end here.

It all depends on what kind of image you want for your site. It's necessary for the site to find it's own niche so that it would get a decent ammount of visitros.
I think that having manga and anime as the main focus would be smart as that would have a bit less direct competition than just as a straight up review site. Basically you want to get as high as possible when searching for a relevant term in google. Most people never look past the first page.
That doesn't mean you couldn't review video games or anything else that has absolutely nothing to do with anime or manga, but that wouldn't be the main focus of the stie.

Yes, as far as I know, the main focus of the sight will be anime and manga. Vidya james reviews would be a smaller section of the overall site, where someone or multiple people would talk about video games and maybe do an LP series or something at some point.
But, as far as I knew, its a manga/anime review site. I think that's what CJ wanted to do. So we should primarily stick with that. But its fine too to have a reviewer talk about something a bit different, just for the fun of it and to spice things up.

This is exactly my intention. There are movies, games and other mediums that do relate to Manga and Anime, without even being about the subject. Pacific Rim, for instance, would be a great movie to talk about, considering it has heavy influences from Anime. But it itself is not an Anime. Reviewing even something every once in a while like BBC's Sherlock would count because it has its own manga. There are also video games like Catherine, the Persona series, Star Ocean and others that are also influenced by Anime. Hell, I'll probably end up talking about The Legend of Zelda manga. Again, the priority is Manga and Anime, but we can definitely deviate if the situation calls for it.

I'd like to clarify, that I never intended that the site be an amalgam of 4 equal parts, of anime, manga, video games and movies.
I just meant that I don't think you should completely cut out video games and movies and pretend like they don't exist. Even if it's just a small section, it's better than no section.

So, like, what's going on with this thread right now? Are we gonna make a new poll for the other ideas, or just decide informally, or stick with the thing we've already voted for, or what?

Manga Review Calendar HQ
or
Review Calendar HQ
This is what I would most likely vote for. Or the sweet and sour one. It's up to you guys at this point.

Manga Review Calendar HQ or Review Calendar HQ This is what I would most likely vote for. Or the sweet and sour one. It's up to you guys at this point. I'd be fine with this. I mean, I hate to sound like I'm just promoting something adapted from my own idea, but I did sorta throw it out there with the other ideas with the thought that maybe you might wanna use one, so if you do then that's great? Yeah? I'm making sense, okay. Also, I like the HQ added to the end. I wouldn't object to Sweet and Sour reviews either (because I don't wanna cause any more delays) but Manga Review Calendar HQ has our focus in the title, which, like Mise said, would probably give us a better chance at showing up in searches and stuff.

With a name involving manga, I think we'd show up in searches, but behind how many other manga related sites?

Actually for Google it doesn't really matter if the title has anything to do with Chinese cartoons or not, as long as the sub-title is something simple like 'Manga and Anime Reviews' it will show up all the same. With a name involving manga, I think we'd show up in searches, but behind how many other manga related sites? There really isn't any other way around it than try to get people google Manga/Anime reviews, more obscure terms won't get searched and it doesn't matter if it shows better with that as no one will search it. No one will search the site title either, at least untill the site gets some fame.

There should be a gimmick, like what Red Letter Media does.
Like, "Get drunk and talk about anime." or something.
