Kinda saw it. I say kinda because I was distracted throughout most of it by people in the theater talking, particularly during the second half which I barely got to enjoy at all, but here's what I remember.
Yeeeah, as CJ said, antagonist seemed unneeded. (Stop reading the rest of this paragraph if you wanna avoid spoilers btw) Although I do appreciate the moral of "devoting yourself entirely to someone you met the first day" is wrong and dumb, It kinda disappointed me. Mainly because I thought this was gonna be Disney's first real platonic friendship between a guy and a girl. Another thing I appreciated was that song the trolls had, which taught a genuinely valuable lesson about love, what to expect from it, and how it's worth it anyway. Weird that Disney would take so long to figure these things out, but better late than never!
Snowman wasn't as annoying as I thought he'd be. Sure, he was there for silly reasons, and did nothing but be silly, but... he wasn't as annoying as I thought he'd be. Could have ruined the movie, and he didn't. That's all I could say. I would have liked Sven the reindeer a lot more, but I'm tired of funny Disney horses (or other horse-like mammals) at this point.
Uh, character relationships were... most of the parts that I missed because of the aforementioned chatty theater-goers. Will talk about those later. I did like both of the sisters though! They were cool!
One gripe I will have about this, is that the opening scenes were really good, and well done, and heart-wrenching. I say this is a gripe, because it felt like the strongest emotional points were thrown in right at the very beginning, and the story failed to live up to those in the rest of the movie. Maybe that's just me though. I still must applaud the scenes where we first see ice sister suffering because of her power. I really felt for her, and her struggle, and the pain she felt when everything fell apart around her. This is easily the most poignant Disney movie in the past several years, and that alone makes it worth the viewing.
The music was... hit and miss for me. I could tell that they got experienced Broadway songwriters to do the music, which I loved the crap out of, but some of the lyrics still came off as a little forced. No examples come to mind right now, but there were a few rhymes that did make me cringe. When it was good, though, it was really good! A lot of people liked and have talked about the ice sister's song, but the very first opening number, the one about breaking the ice, had even more of an impact on me, as it showed me right away how wrong I was about what kind of movie it was going to be. A necessary step, after how misleading and terrible the marketing was.
All in all, it was still a good movie, even though I never felt like I got to enjoy it properly. I'll give a better review when I see it again. Winner for Best Animated Picture? I'd dig it.
